In today’s digital world, text messages are a common way we communicate. However, scammers have also jumped on this bandwagon, using fake texts to steal personal information or money. Known as “smishing” (SMS phishing), this scam is growing more sophisticated. Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself from random text scams.

Recognizing a Scam Text

Scam texts often:

  • Claim there’s a problem with your account or an urgent issue that needs immediate attention.
  • Offer a reward, prize, or freebie to entice you to click a link.
  • Contain suspicious links or ask you to provide personal information like passwords, Social Security numbers, or bank account details.

A common tactic scammers use is impersonating trusted organizations, such as banks, government agencies, or retailers. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns against clicking links or responding to such messages.

What to Do If You Receive a Scam Text

  1. Don’t Click Links: Even if the message looks legitimate, avoid clicking any embedded links.
  2. Don’t Reply: Replying, even to say “Stop,” lets the scammer know your number is active.
  3. Report It: Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) to notify your mobile carrier and block the sender.
  4. Delete the Text: Once reported, delete the message to avoid any accidental clicks.

Tips to Protect Yourself

  • Use Trusted Contact Methods: Contact organizations directly using official websites or phone numbers.
  • Be Cautious with Links: Hover over links to check where they lead before clicking.
  • Enable Spam Filters: Many mobile carriers offer tools to block unwanted messages.
  • Stay Informed: Visit resources like the FTC website to stay updated on the latest scams.
